This Augmented Reality class was done to provide an overview of the technology in the context of facility design.

Augmented reality has the potential to transform the way you design and operate your facility reducing capital costs, increasing efficiency and order accuracy.

Augmented reality is a type of virtual reality that is really intended to add computer based information to the things we see around us.

It works by performing 4 key functions:

  1. Scene Capture
The reality that should be augmented is captured using a video-capture device
  2. Scene Identification
The captured reality is scanned to define the exact position where the virtual content should be embedded
  3. Scene Processing
Virtual content is requested, typically from the internet or from any kind of database.
  4. Scene Visualization
The AR system produces a mixed image of the real space as well as the virtual content.

There is some much future for this type of technology, businesses just need to pay attention at its evolution.

  1. There is actually still quite a lot of manufacturing in the U.S….but there are various public policies which have been extremely deterimental this industry and there are a lot more such policies in the works. Even more seriously, there are *cultural* attitudes which are very hostile toward man.afcturing..uI explore some of these in my post .
